Language is defined as the innate ability to communicate with one another conversationally across the globe.
Linguistics is the study of language which also often delves into the subsections of language known as:
+ Phonology + Morphology
+ Syntax + Semantics
+ Pragmantics
As future educators it is important to keep in mind that Language is a valuable asset in any classroom. And that we should have an understanding of how it works.
In Boroditsky's Ted talk, she goes over how across languages the way we communicate and understand concepts around us differs exponentially. This affects how we describe, navigate, communicate, etc.
It is good to keep in mind that each ELL will be different, and so not all language interpretations, meanings, context, and more will apply to their current knowledge. So it is the responsibility of educators to guide them.
Understanding and effectively utilizing Language within the classroom is an essential tool for Teachers, especially with ELL students.
In multiple studies it had been documented that teachers talk for the majority of classroom discussion, whereas students get a mere smaller portion of that time. As Educators we should encourage peer discussion as it benefits our students socially, academically, and developmentally.
In the case of ELLs, class discussion will help improve their own practice of speaking english socially, allow for peers response and help, but also allow them to feel more welcome in the classroom.
