The English language is difficult enough to learn when it is your first language. But imagine that you are an ELL, in America for the first time, and you cannot communicate with your classmates. Not only would you not be able to talk to your peers, you also would not be able to talk to your teacher. This would affect a students quality of learning because how are they supposed to learn if they do not understand the language it is being taught in? That is why language acquisition is so vital for all EL students.
One way to help ELL students with language acquisition is the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) Model. This is a reliable guide on how educators can help their ELL students. The factors that make up the SIOP model are building background, comprehensible input, lesson preparation, interaction, strategies, lesson delivery, practice and application, and review and assessment. These have all been found to help ELL students with learning new subjects. Research shows that students who were taught by teachers that use the SIOP method are more likely to perform better on standardized tests, such as the PSSAs. This is helpful for EL’s because statistically, they usually do not perform as well as native English speakers on standardized testing.
