When you are trying to read in a language that is foreign to you, it is difficult to figure out what the words in front of you mean. So, it is even more difficult when trying to learn a subject during school, such as math or science, in another language. Not only do you have to know the basics of that language, but you also have to know the academic language. Fortunately, there are strategies to help EL learners comprehend their instructions that are written in a language that may be new to them.
One way teachers can help ELL's confidence in the classroom is by connecting new ideas to one that they already know. Building background knowledge is a key component to teaching EL learners. Some other helpful strategies to help EL's are visual components, translations, modeling, and partnering up with peers. These are good strategies to help EL learners gain confidence in comprehending the material that they are trying to learn. Confidence is important to have in learning because it can make a student feel as though they can do anything that they put their mind to. This is especially important for EL learners, as they are learning a whole new language, and may be struggling to communicate and make friends.
